The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) kicked off its 2019 Global Conference and Exhibition at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida in style. Revolving around the theme “Champions of Health Unite,” the conference invites leaders and visionaries from healthcare to come together under one roof and collaboratively address all the challenges that emerge when moving towards value-driven healthcare.

Commencing from 11th February, this year’s conference started with a Superhero-themed reception for all its attendees. The theme was well-thought and was linked to the larger HIMSS19 theme as it needs every stakeholder to unite and fight off the challenges of healthcare. The care teams need to unite their ‘powers’ to keep the patient at the center and streamline care activities. Additionally, the theme resonated with us because righting the wrongs of healthcare technology will take nothing less than heroic efforts.

Over the first day, numerous sessions by healthcare premiers showcased innovative approaches towards creating a roadmap for the future.

One of the highlights was an insightful session which included world-class leaders such as Steven Posnack, Executive Director, ONC Office of Technology, Elise Sweeney Anthony, Director, ONC Office of Policy, and Dr. Terrence O’Malley, member of ONC Health Information Technology Advisory Committee who shared their views on implementing data-sharing technologies.

Centered around the new rule of HHS around information blocking, the panel discussed diversified use of technology to assist patient’s data as they transition between their plans. For instance, the records should be easily-transferable among providers when a patient requests so when changing physicians. The patient needs to be someone in control of their health records and not just an entity being ‘acted upon.’

The speakers further proposed adopting standardized APIs and implementing technology that allows individuals easy and secure access to their health records. Health Information Exchanges and networks are subject to penalties of up to $1 million for lack of interoperability. It’s solid support from the federal organization to promote seamless data exchange and enable real-time insights to define care delivery.

Another enlightening session was on “Smarter Care: The AI-Driven Patient Experience” by Neil Gomes, Chief Digital Officer and EVP for Technology Innovation and Consumer Experience at Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, along Viraj Patwardhan, Vice President, Digital Design and Consumer Experience at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Gomes and Patwardhan shed light on strategies around creating a driving force in value-based care with the power of AI. While keeping the receiver’s end of care at the top-most priority, they explored various strategic processes that could help innovate the solution to everyday problems of organizations with digital prowess.

With such exceptional sessions on the first day, Day 2 at HIMSS looks forward to featuring more interactive and informative sessions. Clustered around the improvement of the major pillar of patient satisfaction, CMS administrator, Seema Verma will be delivering a session focusing on transforming the healthcare system while dealing with interoperability challenges. The session will further highlight the initiatives taken by HHS and CMS to curb such data-related issues faced by organizations.

Additionally, Day 2 will also feature a session by Nathan Riggle, Director of Analytics at Mercy ACO, Iowa. Recommended by Chilmark, the session is titled “Leveraging Data Analytics To Complement Value-based Approach” and will outline various strategies to ensure smooth care delivery. Scheduled on 13th February, Riggle will discuss ideas on how to right the wrongs of the existing system and move towards an efficient healthcare framework.

HIMSS19 will also present a number of off-stage opportunities to connect with healthcare thought leaders. The attendees will have a chance to meet with Glenn Steele Jr. MD, PhD, former Geisinger Health System President and CEO and Alejandro Perez-Trepichio MD, CMO, Millennium Physician Group at Booth #2715, at 1:30 PM ET.
