In his latest Forbes column, Seth Joseph asked the question, “Is Platform As A Service (PaaS) becoming healthcare’s preeminent cloud model?“ He then offered four compelling reasons why he believes PaaS is the superior data management and application development model for healthcare delivery systems that want to create more value for their organizations, patients, and other healthcare stakeholders.

With rapid advancements in healthcare and technology, life expectancy has surged, driving an unprecedented demand for healthcare services. In 2023,  healthcare spending in the US was projected to grow at a 5.5% annual rate—yet this growth isn’t enough to meet the needs of an aging, expanding patient population. Compounding the issue, the healthcare workforce is not keeping pace. 

Consumerism is on the rise in healthcare. Retailers and clinics continue to reshape experiences for patients, telehealth has gone mainstream, and consumers are looking to non-traditional providers to address their health concerns. In an industry where competition is around every corner, healthcare providers need to stay relevant and focus on the retention and loyalty of their patients. But how? The answer lies in the ability to deeply engage with patients on a highly personal level across their care journey—from acquisition to wellness. Interoperability and FHIR are critical foundational capabilities to realize transformational value from healthcare data. Ultimately, this will improve the patient experience, increase the efficiency and quality of care, and further improve researchers’ and doctors’ ability to understand diseases and find new treatments. FHIR can open up data that is otherwise siloed and difficult to access. It can certainly help advance healthcare instead of just simplifying data access and sharing. There is no doubt that FHIR offers many benefits, but is it enough to propel healthcare into the realm of interoperability?
