The World Health Organization has labeled AMR, or antimicrobial resistance, as one of the three greatest threats to human health. Antimicrobial-resistant organisms have been responsible for an increasing percentage of infections originating in hospitals and have resulted in a widespread impact on patient outcomes. Despite the threat of AMR, inappropriate antibiotic use persists.

Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs, or ASPs, are designed to coordinate activities that promote and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents. This multidisciplinary approach can help hospitals select the optimal drug, dosage, and duration of therapy to maximize clinical outcomes while minimizing antibiotic resistance.
